Reduce overall data use: In general, turning off mobile data when you aren’t using it will reduce your overall data use. They also cited citing schools and parents’ concern that cellphone use was affecting students’ health and social interaction. Children would play games through its touch screen interface, parents would be able to download new games through a wireless connection, and we even foresaw a web-based repository for the games. These pocket-size wireless routers generate a small, private Wi-Fi network, allowing you to connect a laptop, tablet, and other devices to the same cellular data network as your phone. The proposed device would use Bluetooth for wireless networking, a USB stick for memory storage, and PCMCIA for peripheral expansion, while a GPS and a camera would be available as extras. The other service that BigTable makes heavy use of is Chubby, the highly-available, reliable distributed lock service written by Mike Burrows (legend has it that he wrote within a couple of days of arriving at Google). The very first thing you need to know about BigTable is that it isn’t a relational database. BigTable tablet servers each maintain responsibility for a number of tablets (the paper says typically between 10 and 1000). There’s no need to replicate tablet servers, because every update to a tablet is reflected in GFS (and therefore replicated) immediately either through a normal log file or being written to an SSTable. The paper makes a point of mentioning that BigTable is compatible with Sawzall (the Google data processing language) and MapReduce (the parallel computation framework), the latter uses BigTable as an input and output source for MapReduce jobs. And just in case you want to preserve marital — if not musical — harmony, consider buying a nice pair of headphones so that dad’s musical output doesn’t filter through the rest of the home.

A column is identified by a family:qualifier pair. The table has a column family anchor that stores the address linked to, and the site from which it comes. Columns with the same family typically contain the same kind of data, and so may be stored together and compressed together efficiently. This tells us that a BigTable provides a mapping from some index – perhaps a row number and a column description – to some data, which may be completely unstructured. The design of BigTable is such that the number of column families is expected to be kept small, but the number of columns may become very large. Names on mailboxes and un-retrieved packages encourage possible thieves to park outside, dial the number and see if someone picks up. Although GFS provides Google with reliable, scalable distributed file storage, it does not provide any facility for structuring the data contained in the files beyond a hierarchical directory structure and meaningful file names. However, no row is required to have data in any column family, and the ability to define columns on the fly means that extra structure may be added to the data at run-time if required, as long as it lies within the loose structure mandated by the column families.

Chubby locks are stored in a filesystem-like hierarchical naming structure. This should come as no surprise: one persistent theme through all of these large scale distributed data store papers is that RDBMSs are hard to do with good performance. It’s well known that more expressive solutions are required for large data sets. GFS provides reliable storage for SSTables, which are the Google-proprietary file format used to persist table data. BigTable provides an API to application developers that allows the typical operations you might expect; creation and deletion of tables and column families, writing data and deleting columns from a row.
